Canton Retrievers will tailor the upland gun dog training specifically to your dog. This program will meet your desired level of performance for your upland hunting companion. This program will focus on the foundations of:

  1. Obedience

  2. Steady to Shot

  3. Game Retrieval to Hand

This program is designed to provide the handler with a dog that is obedient, steady to shot, delivers to hand and most of all excited to hunt.  We begin the process by doing a thorough review of obedience, in a controlled environment, to make sure our obedience skills are in place and to the level they need to be.  After we know our obedience commands are solid in a controlled environment, we will transition into off lead and eventually an electronic collar.  Obedience is the most important part of a good hunting partner that is why we make it a high priority to make sure all components of obedience are in place before we move forward. 

Once our obedience is solid we move forward to teach the dog to become steady to shot.  During this time your dog will become very familiar with many different types of birds as well as gunshots at varying distances and locations.  This will help the dog become much more adaptable in the field in different hunting scenarios. With obedience and steadiness in place we need to make sure that the dog brings the bird back to the handler. 

Through a series of conditioning we are able to teach the dog to hold the bird and deliver it to the handler at hand. Being that all dogs learn and progress at different stages timeframes with any program are very subjective, however, most dogs complete this program in 3-5 months.  At the end of this Gun Dog program you will have a well rounded dog that is able to pickup and deliver your birds with confidence. 

Any dog completing this program will have the necessary fundamentals to pass an AKC Junior level hunt test or UKC Started level test.   If you are looking to develop your hunting partner into something beyond this level our Advanced Gun Dog program will have all the necessary steps to get you there.
