The time to start force fetching your dog depends on each individual dog. With that caveat, I start this training at roughly 6 months of age.
It is important to note that these young dog have not yet created habitual tendencies when retrieving and are still easily moldable. We can instill early on what we desire and can created the conditioned responses we want to achieve the objectives set forth.
At this point we have been able to formalize obedience commands as well as build the prey drive and the optimal retrieve desire of that dog. This is typically the timeframe that the dog should be able to mentally sustain and comprehend stimulus. This is also the time frame that they have made the physical changes necessary to tolerate this process, we don't want to aggravate an already sensitive mouth because of adult teeth coming in.
Force fetch teaches the dog to pickup, hold and deliver and object. The icing on the cake is force fetch training will add in a level of discipline that will instill confidence in a young timid dog as well as reign in a unruly puppy.
This training is a foundational part of our program. The integral part of the learning experience is for the dog learning about stimulation how it is applied and how to shut it off. This pressure-on and pressure-off education sets the foundation for many advanced concepts to be learned by.
